Many companies hold current and legacy information of all sorts on microfilm and microfiche. The problems with this are many; old, expensive to maintain readers are needed; often only one copy of the film exists; only one user can use it at a time; very little indexing is available for searching which makes the process very time consuming.
We are now able to convert the images held on these old media into electronic images that can be indexed and viewed on PC's by multiple users. Most formats of film can be converted and the quality will usually be as good, if not better than, the original. Images can then be printed, faxed, emailed straight from the users PC or archived. The efficiencies and savings from such a system are substantial. Images and their indexes can be supplied with some simple viewing software to enable them to be viewed on a standalone PC, or can be uploaded into a corporate Document Management System.
