WORLD NEWS.......
Kathakali actor and co-founder of the Kathakali Company has spent the last 25 years developing a new sign language based on the Mudras, sign language used in classical Indian dance, and the English language.
TALKING HANDS
Talking Hands has provided people who are deaf and people who are blind living in South India to communicate with each other in an international language for the first time.
We would like to expand the exciting exploration of this new sign language with people who are deaf, have learning difficulties or where English is not the first language in the UK and in other countries.
This pioneering project will enable people to explore sign language and to understand the poetry of the classical performing arts of India.
Kathakali is storytelling dance drama that originated in the temples of Kerala, South West India 500 years ago.
A Kathakali story is told through a 4,000 year old sign language, called Mudras first used in temple rituals and centuries later in Kathakali drama.
KATHAKALI operates on a deeper level than words and escorts the audience into the enchanting world of legends.
KATHAKALI is a masterpiece of theatre that captures life, as it was known, thousands of years ago, documented first in stone carvings, and then in the beautiful dances and dramas of India.
Kathakali has the power to engage the entire community into the magical world of storytelling.
