EXHIBITION OF KATHAKALI COSTUMES

Kathakali costumes are exquisite and represent the Hindu deities through the most remarkable and stunning visual images. The costumes have changed little in the last 500 years; the colours, designs, materials and skills have been handed down through the generations with some of the exhibits being more than 200 years old.

The costumes are available for hire to museums and galleries with a high rate of security.

Performances and workshops in Kathakali drama, make up and costume conservation is available as part of the exhibition.

PEORMANCES
The exhibition provides an ideal opportunity to hold workshops and performances to enable people to experience how the actors would move in the costumes plus observe, draw and appreciate the intricate craftsmanship of the exhibits.

THE GATEWAY TO INDIA EXHIBITION This popular exhibition links two different theatrical traditions from across the world through an elaborate use of colour to illustrate the “importance of the visual image in
 theatre".

FROM THE EAST - KATHAKALI -the classical dance drama of Kerala, South West India – ancient, sacred and symbolic costumes.

FROM THE WEST - CENTRE OCEAN STREAM - a celebration of colour and the vision of visual artist - Kalamandalam Barbara Vijayakumar.

CENTRE OCEAN STREAM

Visual artist Kalamandalam Barbara Vijayakumar founded Centre Ocean Stream Performance Company in 1977 as a unique performance art company.

Kalamandalam Barbara Vijayakumar trained at Rochdale College of Art and Winchester School of Art. The concept of Centre Ocean Stream evolved after years of experimenting with the idea of "living colour" whilst a student at Winchester School of Art. Exploring the affects of sunlight and placing sculpture in nature led to the  introduction of the "performer" to inject movement into static images.

Lighting and choreography followed in rapid succession resulting in a stage performance of abstract images where the performers task was to inject the images with life. New  methods of performing and choreography was essential where colour, light, space, time, sound, movement and shape created a total visual experience.

Workshops in Kathakali into abstract performance art incorporate the classical skills of a Kathakali actor combined with the abstract concept of Centre Ocean Strea. Together they explore the power and importance of visual theatre.
