What is Slam Poetry?
A
competitive framework for the writing and performing of rap, freeverse or traditional styles of poetry in front of a live audience and selected judges.

30 of the best live literature performers, slam poets, teachers and writers have been visiting over 200 schools per academic year running poetry slams. Working with over 100 pupils per day, year 5 - year 11,  this is the biggest and most impacting literacy and arts education project in the U.K. today. The fully trained artists talent spot for young writers and performers often holding regional slam competitions in both team and solo formats. This year 2007/8 only young persons nominated by the 30 approved U.K. Slam poetry coaches can enter the U.K. final.
3 age categories under 12, under 15 and under 18. Two minute maximum time limit, no props or costume however spoken word can include small amounts of melody or beat box. 5 judges from the artform will pick the top poet in each category for the U.K. Slam Poetry title.

School workshop format ranges from 70 pupils all day writing and performing to 360 pupils (4 x 1 hour 90 pupils per session) . Cost range from £1 per head to approx £5 per head. (see costings page)
Writing themes this year have included, tolerance, healthy eating, wordplay, Poetry from other cultures, speaking and listening, the 5 r's and more.
